Here’s another love quote for you. Do you have a love quote you want to share? Include it in the comment section.
"Love cures people – both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it."
– Karl Menninger
Most of us are familiar with the saying ‘It’s better to give than receive.’ You probably grew up hearing that quote repeatedly. In order for the ‘giver’ to reap the rewards of giving, the recipient must be a good receiver.
Many years ago a man I knew gave a compliment to a woman I was standing with. I think he said he liked what she was wearing. She immediately started to downplay the compliment with remarks like “oh, I just bought it off the sale rack” or something like that. (Does that sound familiar?!)
He then said something I’ll always remember. “The trouble with you women is you don’t know how to take a compliment. Just say ‘Thank you’.” That seems pretty simple.
He was, in essence, teaching her how to receive.
Receiving love is no different than receiving a gift or a compliment. People give love in many different ways. Some people buy gifts to express their love. Others say, “I love you.” And yet others will do things (small or big) to express their love for another.
In order to fully give love to another the receiver needs to fully let it in. And vice versa. No pushing it away with a ton of excuses and rationalizations. When we can receive love, more love will flow our way.
