Hooking Up TV Show Starts Tonight

The documentary show about online dating – Hooking Up – premieres tonight (Thur. July 14) on ABC at 9 pm ET and PST.   In this 5-part series, the online dating experiences of 11 women are documented over a one year period.

The episode summary for tonight, according to Zap2It (www.zap2it.com), is:

"A first date turns into a nightmare when the man who arrives looks nothing like his description; a female doctor pays a price when she keeps her true identity a secret from her date at first."

This could be interesting…

Online Dating Story

This is my first online dating story.  Yes, there are a few more…   If you have a true story (about you) that you want to share, please email me or add a comment.

After exchanging messages with a couple men online I had arranged to meet one in person.  This was to be my first online date.

The night before we were to meet I watched an episode of “Touched by an Angel.”   For those of you who have never watched the show, it revolves around three angels who help people through their crisis or challenge without the people knowing they are angels until the end.

On this particular episode, a young girl plans to meet the young boy she has been conversing with online.  Only the young man is actually a predator.  When she goes to meet who she thinks is a young boy the man abducts her.  Luckily the angels swoop in and save her.  All ends well.  The moral of the story is obvious to viewers.

Now I’m paranoid about the date I’m about to go out on the next day.  I’ve already taken some precautions as we are meeting in a very busy restaurant in a busy part of town.  My mind starts to think up all the things that could go wrong…  What if something happens?  I’m single, who will notice I’m missing?  How long will it take before they notice me missing?

I figure I have to come up with a plan to quell my new found fears (which seem incredibly dramatic in hindsight….).   A friend and I decide that I should give her the name of my date, his cell phone number, the restaurant we’re going to, and the time I expect to be home.  I’m then to call her at that time to let her know I arrived home safely.  I doubt I’d have implemented any of these had I not watched that show!

I meet my date the next night and he’s really sweet.  He ends up telling me some stories about dating women online…  Hint – never send a man (or woman) a picture of someone else if you plan on meeting them in person one day….  I regress…

I called my friend when I got home and all was well.  I did implement this plan for the next couple dates letting her know where I was going and called her when I got home.

While it’s good to take precautions, I find it’s important to trust my gut.  If something doesn’t feel right about meeting someone, trust that feeling.

Dating Photo

Are you wondering whether to include a dating photo with your profile?

According to Match.com “profiles with photos get up to 15 times more attention than those without.”

Plus, as a friend pointed out recently, if you post your photo and you get less emails or messages after doing so, it’s a good thing.  Huh?!  You don’t waste your time corresponding with people who aren’t attracted to you.  I’ll admit I prefer looking at ads with photos more than ones without…

Obviously if your profession requires you to be discreet about your personal life you may not be able to post a dating photo.

Dating Site Reviews

As you have probably discovered, there are hundreds of dating sites on the internet.  I found over 350 dating sites when I started the Dating Services and Tips dating review site.

With so many dating sites, how do you even know which one is the right one for you?

I believe there are 11 essential criteria to a great dating site.  I compared each dating site to the criteria and ranked each out of a possible 35 points.  Speed dating sites are ranked out of a total of 10 points.  Dating Service Review Criteria Explained

A summary of the criteria for a great dating site are below:

1.  Pricing and Payment Options

Does the dating site offer multiple pricing options and payment methods?

2.  Member Base

Does the site have a large number of members locally or worldwide?

Do these members visit the site regularly?

3.  Creating a Profile

Are you able to personalize your profile by either writing about yourself and what you’re looking for in your words or do you just pick choices from a list of options?

4.  Viewing a Profile

Can free members view the profiles of other members?

5.  Methods of Contacting Members

How many methods are available?  A dating site does need to make money in order to provide their service.   Paid members will naturally have access to more features than free members.  If a free member can’t read an email sent by a paid member, is it really worth it for the paid member to belong to the site?

6.  Methods of Searching for Members

Before purchasing a membership, I want to search to see how many potential daters live in my area.  Does the site allow you to search?  Can you see when the person was last online?  Who cares if there are 500 potential dates in your city if only 10 of them have been at the site in the last two weeks or months!

7.  User Friendly

Is the site user friendly and easy to use?

8.  Handling of Abuse /Safety Issues

Does the site protect your personal information?  Do they have a process for handling abuse?

9.  Technical Support and Customer Service

Is technical support and customer service easy to contact?

10.  Important Features

Is the site professional looking?  Are you inundated with pop-up or pop-under ads?

11.  Bonus Points for Extra/Unique Features

Does the site have a personality test or matching system unique to them.?  Do they do a criminal check of members?

Stay tuned for reviews of specific dating sites.

Writing an Online Dating Profile

What’s the secret to getting noticed online?  Taking action and actually writing an online dating profile definitely helps!  Even if it’s only 2 or 3 sentences long.  While this seems obvious, many daters don’t do it.

When I’ve browsed the profiles at the online dating sites I joined, I noticed that some people leave the ‘about me’ portion of their profile blank.  What’s the point of joining an online dating site if other daters can’t read a bit about you?  If you’re serious about meeting potential dates or even a friend, at least tell us a bit about yourself and what you’re looking for.

Fortunately, some online dating sites require members to include a minimum of 2 sentences, for instance, in the ‘about me’ and ‘what I’m looking for’ areas of their profile before they will allow it to be posted for other members to see.

If you don’t have your profile up – get writing!  Who knows what those words could lead to…

The Three Types of Dating Sites

As you have probably discovered, there are hundreds of dating sites on the internet.  I found over 350 dating sites when I started my Dating Services and Tips dating review site.

I noticed all of these sites could be organized into three types:  online dating, speed dating, and matchmaking.  Each service attempts to match people up in a slightly different way.

Online dating sites allow members to write a profile and then search other member profiles to find a potential date or mate.

Matchmaking sites find potential matches for you.  Once you complete a comprehensive questionnaire the site matches you with other members who are compatible with you.

Speed dating sites organize live events that allow you to meet a number of potential dates over the course of a few hours.

The pros and cons of each are explained further in Tip 1 of our Ready, Set, Date! ecourse.

Dating Categories

The dating sites we recommend have been sorted into 12 categories.  Each of the categories will be briefly explained over the next week.  Plus I’ll include my top recommendations for each.  You can get a peek now by clicking on any of the links below:
